A distributional approach to the geometry of dislocations at the mesoscale

    Get PDF
We develop a theory to represent dislocated single crystals at the mesoscopic scale by considering concentrated effects, governed by the distribution theory combined with multiple-valued kinematic fields. Our approach gives a new understanding of the continuum theory of defects as developed by Kroener (1980) and other authors. Fundamental 2D identities relating the incompatibility tensor to the Frank and Burgers vectors are proved under global strain assumptions relying on the geometric measure theory, thereby giving rise to rigorous homogenisation from mesoscopic to macroscopic scale.Comment: article soumi

    Description of GADEL

This article describes the first implementation of the GADEL system : a Genetic Algorithm for Default Logic. The goal of GADEL is to compute extensions in Reiter's default logic. It accepts every kind of finite propositional default theories and is based on evolutionary principles of Genetic Algorithms. Its first experimental results on certain instances of the problem show that this new approach of the problem can be successful.Comment: System Descriptions and Demonstrations at Nonmonotonic Reasoning Workshop, 2000 6 pages, 2 figures, 5 table

Conflicts in Development: Tourism and the Cattle Industry in Brazil

This paper challenges the conventional view that where there is a political elite, economic development will proceed along lines that sacrifice future generations for the benefit of the current ruling class. We find that shortfalls in the balance of payments will cause those in authority to promote activities that encourage tourism as a solution to balance of payments deficit. The vehicle for generating tourism is the provision of public goods. More traditional paths toward development particularly cattle ranching are displaced by tourist attractions. While motivated by myopic self-interest, the pursuit of public goods reduces the amount of debt transferred to future generations and thereby serves to redistribute wealth inter-temporally. Brazil over the period 1965 until 1998 is used as a test case.tourism, cattle, ecotourism, public goods

Exploring the reality of density substructures in the Palomar 5 stellar stream

We present an analysis of the presence of substructures in the stellar stream of the Palomar 5 globular cluster, as derived from Sloan Digital Sky Survey data. Using a matched filter technique, we recover the positions and sizes of overdensities reported in previous studies. To explore the reality of these structures, we also create an artificial model of the stream, in which we construct a realistic background on top of which we add a perfectly smooth stream structure, taking into account the effects of photometric completeness and interstellar extinction. We find that the smooth artificial stream then shows similarly-pronounced substructures as the real structure. Interestingly, our best-fit N-body simulation does display real projected density variations linked to stellar epicyclic motions, but these become less significant when taking into account the SDSS star-count constraints. The substructures found when applying our matched filter technique to the N-body particles converted into observable stars are thus mostly unrelated to these epicyclic motions. This analysis suggests that the majority of the previously-detected substructures along the tidal tail of Palomar 5 are artefacts of observational inhomogeneities.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
